Fiji constitutional watchdog backs international pressure on interim regime

6:02 pm on 22 June 2007

The Fiji Citizens Constitutional Forum, or CCF, says the international community has an important role to play intowards returning the country to parliamentary democracy.

The CCF made the comment after a Samoan MP, Le Mamea Ropati, called on Australia and New Zealand to stop its sanctions against Fiji, saying the two countries only cause suffering to low income people.

The CCF's executive director, the Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says Australia and New Zealand must apply pressure on Fiji.

"Not just a return to parliamentary democracy, but to address the reasons behind the crisis. The issue of alleged corruption, the issue of a lack of transparency, the issue of race-based policies, these are the things they need to address, which are not irrelevant to Australia and also New Zealand."

The Reverend Akuila Yabaki says it is not the international community that causes suffering to the people of Fiji, but the issues behind the crisis.
