New Fiji mine owner says Vatukoula should be re-opened within months

A director of the company that has taken over the closed down Vatukoula gold mine in Fiji says he is confident it will re-open shortly with the company having secured financial backing.

The former owner, Emperor, closed the mine in December last year and the families of the 17-hundred miners have since been struggling to provide for their children.

Recent reports say many children in the area have been unable to pay the bus fare to get to school or to buy lunch.

But Brian Wesson of Westech Gold, which took over the mine in March, says everything is now on track for a reopening in the next few months.

"Financiers are in place and I think it's all on the brink of being resolved and everybody has seen the need to work together and get this to happen."
