The Fiji Media Council has recognised the efforts of local journalists with the launch of the Awards for Media Excellence.

The Fiji Times quotes council chairman Daryl Tarte as saying that the past six months has undoubtedly been one of the most trying times for local journalists.

Speaking at the launch Mr Tarte says the award is to recognise the tremendous contribution of journalists to members of the public for demonstrating courage in getting information.

More than 13,000 Fiji dollars is up for grabs in the different categories with each category worth a thousand dollars each as well as a trophy.

The Council says it is looking forward to bringing in a renowned New Zealand journalist as chief guest for the awards night scheduled for 29 September.
