Fiji's attorney general says if New Zealand wants to support a democratic election, it shouldn't be imposing sanctions.
The interim government in Fiji has accepted in principle a working group's report that says elections could be held there by March 2009.
The country's attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the recent explusion of New Zealand's High Commissioner to Fiji is a separate matter and there should be no retaliatory measures.
"New Zealand needs to think about, ok, what is the long term objective, we want Fiji to move towards Parliamentary democracy in holding elections in a free and fair transparency manner, so New Zealand wants to participate in that, then so New Zealand needs to review its smart sanctions or what have you."
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says if New Zealand encourages people not to visit Fiji, there'll be a lasting economic impact on the country.
