American Samoa Governor to pursue funding for cable car

10:40 am on 19 June 2007

The American Samoa Governor, Togiola Tulafono, says federal funding will be pursued to restore the cable car to Mount Alava, which used to be the territory's top tourist attraction.

The cable car lines were destroyed when a US Air Force aircraft doing a parachute jump for Flag Day crashed in the harbor in 1980.

The governor said that restoring the tramway was a very expensive project.

He says the only likely source of funding for restoring the cable car would be the Economic Development Administration.
