Samoa prime minister to have island named after him

2:28 pm on 18 June 2007

A former Member of Parliament in Samoa says there is a proposal to name an island after the Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi .

The former MP and Senior Citizen of Apolima, Leva'a Sauaso told the Samoa Observer newspaper that his village has submitted a proposal to Government to allow Apolima-tai to be called Tuilaepa Island.

Leva'a says the decision was agreed to by all villagers.

The Human Rights Protection Party says having Apolima-tai named after Tuilaepa would have no impact on the origins of the name Apolima.

He also confirmed that his village has asked Government to consider having a separate MP for Apolima-uta and Apolima-tai.
