The Solomon Islands government has approved a total of $1.5 million dollars for preparations to host the national 29th Anniversary Independence Celebrations in Auki in Malaita province on July 6th.

The Chairman of the National Independence Committee and Under Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Solomon Palusi announced the approved funding last week.

Mr Palusi said transportation costs are expected to consume the largest share of the budget.

This will involve boat charters to transport official vehicles for guests including the Governor General Sir Nathaniel Waena and Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare and other supporting vehicles for logistical work.

Mr Palusi said transportation costs also covered plane hire for VIPs and fast boats for other invited guests, entertainment groups and members of the police force.

Thousands are expected to attend the week long celebrations.
