A Fiji family is blaming police brutality for the death of their son.

Fiji TV reports that 31-year old Tevita Melesede was picked up from his family home at Nasinu by about 8 police officers between midnight and 1.00am yesterday.

His mother, Anise Nakuila, says she went to the local police station at Valelevu about 8km from Suva but was told her son had not been brought there.

Mrs Nakuila says in the morning she received a phone call from a doctor at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital asking her to come and identify someone there.

She says she arrived to find her son dead on the mortuary table with injuries and evidence of physical abuse all over his body.

Mrs Nakuila is demanding answers about what happened to her son.

The assistant commissioner of police crime, Jese Morovia, says he has appointed a team of detectives to investigate what happened.
