Tonga's Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, has announced the voluntary resignation of the Minister of Agriculture, Peauafi Haukinima.

Dr Sevele said that the Minister had been on leave, and has now tendered his letter of resignation.

The Matangi Tonga news site said the Prime Minister did not elaborate on the reason for the Minister's resignation.

But he agreed when asked that the minister's arrest for drunkenness was the reason for the resignation.

The Minister was one of the first elected People Representatives to have been appointed to cabinet by the late king, Taufa'ahau Tupou IV.
