Samoa assistant police commissioner suspended

5:33 am on 28 May 2007

Samoa's police commissioner, Papali'i Lorenese Neru, has suspended one of the assistant commissioners accused by two policewomen of attempted rape.

Papali'i decided to suspend the senior officer after the two female officers lodged separate complaints to the police Professional standards unit.

The unit was established in 2006 to maintain the integrity of the police service in the country.

The police commissioner says the senior officer will remain suspended until the outcome of an internal enquiry into the allegations is known.
