American Samoa's Treasury is concerned over collections from the excise fuel tax, which has dramatically dropped.

Sione Kava of the Office of Petroleum Marketing said that the decline is attributed to fewer fuel imports.

He said for the first eight months of fiscal year 2007, the territory imported 71,000 gallons less than the same period last year.

Mr Kava also said the biggest drop was in marine diesel which accounted for 85 percent of fuel imports.

He said the waiver in the 4-cent tax for fuel imposed three years ago to entice fishing vessels to refuel in the territory, has not worked.
