The French interior ministry says two electorates in the Pacific have the lowest number of candidates in next month's election of a new 577-member French assembly.

The ministry says the electorate of Wallis and Futuna and one electorate in New Caledonia have just five candidates while the largest number has been registered in two Paris constituencies.

Its figures show that there are more than 7,600 candidates which is a drop of about 700 over the number in 2002.

Just under 42 percent of the candidates are women.
