The American Samoa Governor Togiola Tulafono is asking for the support of two U.S. Congressmen to stop provisions that would hike the minimum wage in American Samoa and CNMI.
The proposals are contained in a federal measure now pending in the U.S. Senate.
Provisions in the federal Emergency Supplemental budget calls for a minimum wage hike of 50 cents per hour, 60 days after the bill is enacted into law.
There would be increases every year thereafter, until minimum wages in American Samoa and CNMI reach those of the U.S.
The governor has urged George Miller and Nick Rahall to help as he says the measure would cause a collapse in the economy if it passes.
He has suggested that Congress allow the industry committee to proceed as scheduled with its June 18th hearing, to determine what the economic conditions in American Samoa will be able to support.
