One of Fiji's most senior police officers has been charged with official corruption.

The charge was laid against Assistant Commissioner Josaia Rasiga in a special sitting of the Suva magistrate's court late today after three days of interrogation by the newly established Corruption Investigation Unit.

Mr Rasiga pleaded not guilty.

He has been given bail on a surety of 6-thousand US dollars and ordered to surrender his passport.

Prosecutors allege that Mr Rasiga received 3,370 US dollars from businessman Abbas Ali who was also charged and appeared in court.

Ali deferred making his plea and has also been granted bail.

The offence is alleged to have been committed between July 2002 and January this year.
