American Samoa canneries to get staffing boost

3:38 pm on 10 May 2007

The passing of the guest worker permit bill in American Samoa could see the canneries in Pago Pago receive a boost in employment figures.

The bill proposed by the governor Togiola Tulafono and passed by American Samoa's fono will eliminate the year long wait for a permit, and alleviate the shortage of local workers.

Our correspondent, Monica Miller, says however the lawmakers have expressed concerns and asked who will be responsible for the guest workers' expenses incurred during their stay which could be up to a year.

"There are safeguards the government has instituted in the bill, this permit would only allow the single person to come in he cannot bring in his her spouse or their children."
