Fiji's interim administration is being told that hundreds of millions of dollars from the European Union will not come its way until there is progress on commitments it made in Brussels.
The interim regime had been hoping that despite the coup, the EU would release some funds in the near future but this isn't happening.

"The European Union is warning the interim regime that all of its EU development assistance funding is at risk unless it makes progress on the commitments it made to lift the state of emergency, uphold human rights and have general elections within 2 years. At stake is at least 274 million Fiji dollars of assistance for the sugar industry, 44 million for development projects, including a school rebuilding programme, civic education and solid waste, as well as an additional 83 million dollars for future development assistance. No details were released on the timing or size of the cuts if sufficient progress isn't made but the EU says it will decide in the near future on the appropriate measures to be taken."
