American Samoa's emergency medical service to come under fire division

Plans are underway in American Samoa to transfer the Medical Emergency Service from the LBJ Medical Center to the fire division of the Department of Public Safety.

Governor Togiola Tulafono says this is part of the reorganization of the service to have it part of the government agencies that deals with emergency responses.

Togiola says that under the fire division there would be specific funding available to purchase equipment and this would be beneficial to emergency service, which is in need of new and better equipped ambulances.

The governor hopes to complete the transfer process before the start of the next financial year 2008.
