Fiji's deputy military commander has revealed that the takeover of the government which took place last December was conceived four years ago.
Captain Esala Teleni has told the Fijilive news website that what happened on December 5 should not have been a surprise to anybody.
He says the military had been telling the government and the people of Fiji of the widespread corruption which needed cleaning out since 2002.
Captain Teleni says already at that time the military was concerned that people involved in the 2000 coup were being released from prison.
He says the Qarase government ignored the military's demand that those involved in the 2000 coup should not be appointed to public office.
Captain Teleni says police investigations into the 2000 coup were facing delays and then the government introduced the Reconciliation and Unity Bill and other controversial legislation.
He says these were the factors in the December military takeover.
