Fiji's attorney general dismisses reports of human rights abuses

Fiji's interim attorney general is dismissing reports by activists who say human rights are still being abused in the country.

Activists in Fiji say people are fearful that in speaking out, harm may come to themselves and their families as the military is continuing to take people in for questioning.

Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum questions the motivation of the activists and rejects their allegations.

"The media is operating freely, you will find numerous critical stories of the government and nobody is prevented from running those stories. There have been no new incidents of people being taken up anywhere for questioning."

Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the activists are distributing those claims for their own political or personal gain.
