Solomon's northwest hit by medium earthquake

A strong earthquake has shaken the same part of the Solomon Islands hit by the earthquake and tsunami earlier this month.

The US Geological Survey reported that a quake of 5.4 hit the northwest yesterday afternoon 40 kilometres southeast of the region's main town of Gizo.

A provincial government member and Gizo dive shop manager, Danny Kennedy, said there were reports of houses being toppled on the island of Mono but Gizo appeared to have suffered little damage.

The big earthquake and tsunami on April the second killed 52 people and left thousands homeless.
