A senior Fiji military officer has been appointed to lead a team which will review the membership of the country's Great Council of Chiefs.

Fiji TV reports that the interim minister for Fijian affairs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, has given the task to Col Apakuki Kurusiga.

Col Kurusiga already heads a team which is reviewing the Native Lands Trust Board which is undergoing a clean up by the interim administration.

Ratu Epeli says they are now in the process of appointing a new-look Great Council of Chiefs as soon as possible as directed by the interim prime minister, Commodore Bainimarama.

Ratu Epeli says he seeking legal advice from the attorney general's office before proceeding with the review.

He says the new-look Great Council of Chiefs will have the final say in the appointment of the new vice president.

Earlier this month Commodore Bainimarama suspended the Great Council of Chiefs and revoked the appointments of its members after they rejected President Iloilo's nomination of Ratu Epeli Nailatikau as the new vice president.
