The American Samoan cannery, StarKist Samoa, has begun recruiting additional staff as it prepares to expand production.

The company's parent, Del Monte Foods, is moving the production of tuna pouches from Ecuador to American Samoa because it believes the territory is a lower cost alternative.

The move will result in an additional 300 jobs in the territory.

A company spokesman says the production of tuna pouches should start in July.
