Doubts raised over French Polynesian purchase of Auckland hostel

6:18 am on 23 April 2007

The French Polynesian opposition leader, Oscar Temaru, says he may file a slander case against the government of Gaston Tong Sang over comments related to last year's purchase of a hostel in Auckland.

When Mr Temaru was in power, his government bought the Rocklands Hostel in Epsom to provide accommodation to French Polynesian students and relatives of those seeking medical care in New Zealand as well as a base for Tahiti Tourisme.

But the new government has taken issue with the role of the consultants used in connection with the purchase and lodged a fraud complaint in Tahiti against unknown individuals.

Mr Temaru has dismissed the case as pre-election manipulation.
