Bougainville farmers seek market and better roads to remote areas

9:57 am on 19 April 2007

A cocoa and vanilla farmer in the mountainous Torokina district of Bougainville is calling on authorities to help farmers find potential markets for their produce.

Paramount chief and farmer Tony Seviri told the National newspaper it is a concern for 2,000 farmers in the area.

Mr Seviri says at the moment they are experiencing a cocoa and vanilla flush, but did not have a market and a good road link to transport their produce to the market in Buka.

He says the Autonomous Bougainville Government needs to build roads into the area, and establish a market in their remote area.
