New Caledonian homicide and rape convicts escape from main jail

9:30 am on 17 April 2007

Three inmates in New Caledonia serving sentences for homicide and rape have escaped from the territory's main prison.

The French high commission says a manhunt is under way for the three - one of them was not due to be freed until 2017.

The correction staff union has deplored the poor jail conditions, saying they are unworthy of France.

It says 360 inmates need to share a space designed for 190 prisoners.
