American Samoa's Department of Education plans to offer cash incentives as a way of improving teacher performance.
Our correspondent in Pago Pago says cash bonuses will be used to reward teachers for outstanding work.
A school teacher of the year will receive a $300 bonus; district teacher of the year $600; and territorial teacher of the year $1,000 plus a step up the salary ladder.
For teachers whose students show significant improvement in their test scores during the year, there will be a cash award, with the amount and number of awards to be determined by the Department.
Its not yet clear when the incentive programme will begin.
