American Samoans to be ballotted on key questions

2:00 pm on 30 March 2007

The American Samoan member of the US Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, says he has introduced legislation directing the Secretary of the Interior to include key questions in next year's election in the territory.

Faleomavaega wants to clarify voters' views on American Samoa's political status, democratic process, and federal relationship.

He wants to establish whether individuals who are born in American Samoa should become citizens of the United States.

Secondly he wants to see whether the Senators of the American Samoa Fono should be elected by the qualified electors from the respective counties that the Senators are to represent.

And thirdly, the Congressman wants to explore whether American Samoa should have its own Federal district court with limited jurisdiction.
