Members of the Student Representative Council at Papua New Guinea's University of Technology are stepping down following the resignation of over 60 national lecturers.
The lecturers, who belong to the National Academic Staff Association, NASA, resigned after issues over senior management at the university could not be resolved.
The National Court has also ordered that four leaders of NASA, who are on bail, be arrested again and brought to Port Moresby to face a judge for contempt.
The newspaper, The National, is reporting that tension is running high at the University over concerns that the academic year, now due to begin on Monday, may be in doubt.
Many students are saying they are angry and frustrated over the delay in classes brought about by the deadlock in the negotiations between the NASA and the university council and the subsequent mass resignation of academics.
Meanwhile, NASA caretaker president, Dr Loko Anota, says they've still not had a response from the university council over their resignation letters.
