American Samoa's former director of education, Malaetele Dr. Lui Tuitele, has died at the age of 59.

He had been admitted to hospital nearly a week ago, suffering from severe head aches.

He retired from the government service two months ago after problems plaguing the department's main office prompted the governor to put Malaetele on leave.

Malaetele was also the first chairman of the American Samoa Humanities Council.

He is survived by his wife and four children.
