Small French Polynesian party disbands to merge with main opposition force

A small French Polynesian pro-independence party, Te Hono, has been dissolved with its members joining the opposition Tavini Huiraatira Party led by Oscar Temaru.

The Te Hono leader, Stanley Cross, says the decision was unanimous and part of an attempt to strengthen the pro-independence camp ahead of local and French elections due over the next two years.

"It's better for us, the people who want the independence of Tahiti Nui. We thought it was important to have the unity with us and to be in one party."

Stanley Cross says joining the Tavini was a better option than being part of the Union For Democracy coalition.
