An Australian scrap metal dealer who required medical treatment after spending a night in Honiara's central police station cells has been granted bail after being charged with illegally possessing gold.

Colin Jackson was arrested on Monday, charged with six counts of being in possession of around 220 grams of gold without having a valid gold buying licence.

Jackson was treated yesterday at the Regional Assistance Mission base outside Honiara before appearing in court.

Police say initial medical reports indicate he may have been suffering from a pre-existing medical condition
