Vanuatu re-arranges electorates on Efate

8:13 pm on 14 February 2007

Vanuatu's electoral office has decided to change the allocation of parliamentary seats on the island of Efate.

The Coordinator of Registration and Principal Electoral Officer, Tom Alick Kalo, says the number of seats in Rural Efate will be increased from four to six.

He says at the same time, the six seats for urban Port Vila will be cut to four.

Mr Kalo says the decision complies with the People's Representation Act, which says a voter is to vote where he or she resides.

He says some members of parliament in Port Vila could lose their seats as they have depended on voters from rural areas of Efate.
