Fiji's military has begun a clean-up of its own personnel by taking in five employees of its pay-office over alleged misappropriation of funds.

The military spokesman, Major Neumi Leweni, says the five were arrested on Friday night and questioned about the allegations.

All five have since been sent on leave pending investigations.

Major Leweni says he does not know how much money was involved nor how long the investigations will take.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Sun reports that two officers who were sent on leave following the December 5th takeover have been discharged from the military at their request.

Major Leweni says military lawyer Lt Col Etueni Caucau and Captain Solo Raravula asked to be discharged from the military and their requests have been granted.
