Fiji interim prime minister meets Eminent Persons Group to discuss overthrow of Qarase government

The Pacific Forum's Eminent Persons Group currently on a fact-finding tour of Fiji has been told there is no turning back from the overthrow of the Qarase government and clean-up campaign now under way.

The military commander and interim prime minister, Commodore Bainimarama, stressed this to the four-member group during his meeting with them yesterday.

He told the group of the interim administration's aim of eradicating corruption, mismanagement and abuse of office as well as reform of the electoral system so free and fair elections can be held.

After the meeting, Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji is prepared to engage with partners bilaterally, regionally and multi-laterally in its efforts to fully implement the mandate given to the interim administration by President Iloilo.

He said he is banking on the report of the Eminent Persons to persuade the Commonwealth, the United Nations and the European Union to re-evaluate their future relationship with Fiji.

Commodore Bainimarama said apart from New Zealand and Australia, the other members of the Forum have left Fiji alone to sort out its affairs.

He says the Eminent Persons mission is important as it would create a path for full engagement with the region and the rest of the world.

The EPG will only issue a statement at the end of its fact-finding mission.
