7:35 am on 29 January 2007

The Samoa government has responded to a call by an independent MP for an ambulance for his district hospital in order to save more lives.

A medical vehicle has been given to the Sataua district hospital in Savaii Island by the newly launched Ministry of Fire and Rescue service.

The Minister of police and fire, Toleafoa Apulu Fa'afisi, says the government has responded quickly to the call because saving people's lives must be a priority.

The Independent MP, Motuopua'a Aisoli Va'ai, a doctor by profession, has told parliament that a woman had died before she was transferred to the main hospital because of waiting too long for an ambulance.
