A Papuan advocacy group is calling on Australia to send a fact finding mission to the Indonesian province.
There are reports of a military build up in the Puncak Jaya region in Papua, but the Indonesian embassy in Canberra is denying a deployment.
Australia last year signed an agreement with Indonesia, the Lombok Treaty, which is currently being assessed by the Australian Senate Commitee.
But Matthew Jamieson from the Institute of Papuan Advocacy and Human Rights says Australia needs to send a delegation to the region before ratifying the agreement.
"In the case of Australia here we are to ratify a treaty where we are basically denying that we will continue to be interested about what is happening in West Papua and if we are going to do that we need to know what is going on there first and really, Australian parlamentarians and politicians need to go there and see for themselves because it is right at Australia's doorsteps."
