Wallis and Futuna is preparing for a general election for its 20-member territorial legislative assembly, which is nearing its five year term.

The date for the poll has been set for 1st April according to the official gazette of the French Republic.

The last general elections in Wallis and Futuna were held in March 2002.

Wallis and Futuna's territorial assembly, under its status of French overseas French territory, votes over the mainly French supplied budget and endorses local pieces of legislation.

Its final decisions are subject to approval from the French government's representative, the High Commissioner Superior Administrator, who was appointed by Paris.
