The Solomon Islands government puts a stop on vehicle hiring

5:04 am on 4 January 2007

The Solomon Islands Infrastructure Development Secretary Peter Hauia says hes advised all Government permanent secretaries that vehicle hires had stopped as from the end of 2006 because it's costing too much.

Mr Hauia says hiring of vehicles is out of control with the government spending more than 400-thousand US dollars on vehicle hiring.

He says the money could have been used to buy new vehicles .

He says the Ministry of Finance has been told not to release any payment for any vehicle hired after the end of Decmeber 2006.

Mr Hauia says if any department or ministry continues to hire after this date, then they have to find their own source to fund the hiring themselves.
