Ousted Temaru supporters stand firm after French Polynesia Presidential vote

French Polynesia has a new President in Gaston Tong Sang following today's sitting by the territory's assembly.

31 members of the 57 MP assembly successfully voted in Gaston Tong Sang of the Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party.

One of the members of ousted President Oscar Temaru's Union for Democracy coalition says the result was clinched by a few MPs who were lured by intense lobbying by the Tahoeraa.

MP Sabrina Birk says it is very sad for the general population that a few outer island MPs put their own interests first in negotiations ahead of the vote.

"The people who were asking, the people from the outer islands that wanted to ask for more things. We stood firm in front of them and said we were elected to do certain things and we didn't want to trangress what the population had elected us for."

Sabrina Birk says Mr Temaru's supporters will now throw their weight in behind Segolene Royal in France's spring presidential election.
