Fiji Women's Rights Movement hopes for GCC

2:20 pm on 20 December 2006

The Fiji Women's Rights Movement says it hopes the Great Council of Chiefs will not back what it calls the country's illegal military regime.

The GCC is meeting today and tomorrow to consider its response to the administration led by armed forces commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

Fiji Women's Rights Movement executive director, Virisila Buadromo, says that she hopes the GCC has learnt its lesson after supporting earlier coups.

"The GCC, in terms of their support for democracy, have been very good, especially from the chair, Ratu Ovini Bokini, and I think that's admirable. And I just hope that he's able to convince the other chiefs to think along those lines and uphold democracy and our constitution."

The Fiji Women's Rights Movement says it will monitor who takes up positions in the new administration and later hold them to account.
