Tongan shotputter named New Zealand's top athlete

New Zealand born Tongan Shot putter Valerie Vili has been named the country's top athlete winning the Lonsdale Cup.

The Cup is awarded annually by the NZ Olympic Committee for the most outstanding contribution to an Olympic or Commonwealth Games sport.

Vili, won a gold medal at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and gained a silver medal at the World athletics final in Stuttgart in September and is currently ranked number two in the world.

Earlier on this year she won the NZ title for the sixth time, setting a record of 20.20m.
