NZ defence force staff to remain in Solomon Islands for another year

7:36 pm on 18 December 2006

New Zealand's deployment of around 50 Defence Force personnel to the Regional Assistance Mission in the Solomon Islands is to be extended until March 2008.

The Prime Minister Helen Clark says the current deployment was due to finish soon.

She says New Zealand is committed to helping provide a more secure environment in the Solomon Islands.

New Zealand has maintained an enhanced presence in Honiara since riots in April and along with the military personnel has around 35 police officers there.
