Mayor of Suva says impact of coup will be chaotic and traumatic

The mayor of Fiji's capital Suva, says he is shocked and surprised by Commodore Bainimarama's actions.

The head of the country's military says he will impose martial law early this afternoon, unless all of his demands are met by the Government.

Mayor of Suva, Ratu Peni Volavola, told Morning Report, Commodore Bainimarama's threat of a coup is extremely concerning.

He says he holds great apprehension for the welfare of the residents of Suva, especially women and children.

Ratu Peni Volavola says the impact of a military takeover will be chaotic and very traumatic for the majority of Fijians.
