New Caledonia Rheebu Nuu group welcomes Goro injunction

4:25 pm on 24 November 2006

The New Caledonian Kanak activist group, Rheebu Nuu, is expressing its satisfaction with a Paris court ruling, which imposed an injunction on the waste storage site of the Goro Nickel project.

Rheebu Nuu demanded a complete halt to the construction of the plant, saying it will cause serious pollution.

Although the injunction won't affect the construction of the rest of the plant, Rheebu Nuu's representative, Jacques Boengkih says the order is positive.

"It was partly a success even though they didn't get in full what they were demanding. It is still a success for them, because they have a point of view of the Paris court."

Goro Nickel's deputy general manager, Jeff Zweig, also stresses the success of the order, because he says it dismissed all but one of the claims made by Rheebu Nuu.

Mr Zweig says construction on all fronts is currently going ahead as planned, because the company has not yet received an official copy of the judgement.
