Objections raised to new matai title for American Samoa's Governor

9:09 am on 22 November 2006

Four objections have been filed with the Territorial Registrar's Office against the claim by American Samoa Governor, Togiola Tulafono to the paramount chiefly title Le'iato of Fagaitua.

Yesterday was the deadline for any objections to be filed.

The Governor had registered the title after meetings of various clans consented that he be

the next Leiato.

Our correspondent in Pago Pago says the objections are an indication that the title would be subject to trial if the parties cannot reach a consensus on who the next holder of the Leiato matai title would be.
