A Samoan family is mourning the death of a seven-year-old boy, who was shot dead by his ten-year-old brother earlier this week.

It is not known if the boys were playing.

The assistant police commissioner, Papali'i Li'o Taeu Masipau, told the Samoa Observer the ten-year old is undergoing a psychological examination.

The two boys and their two-year-old brother were alone at home at the time of the incident.

The mother was at work at a tourist resort, while the father had gone fishing.

Papalii says the incident shows the parents' negligence in leaving the children alone while a weapon was in the house.

He says the gun was unlicenced and should have been turned in during a gun amnesty programme in September.
