Samoa government reconsiders appointment of new Attorney General

Samoa's appointment of a New Zealand-based lawyer to the position of Attorney General is reported to be under reconsideration by the cabinet.

It follows revelations that the appointee, Leuatea Peseta Iosefa, was convicted of assaulting a debt collector in September last year.

He was sentenced to 150 hours of community service and ordered to pay 200 dollars reparations.

Leuatea's appointment was approved last week after another one was prematurely reported by the media resulting to the post being re-advertised.

A senior government official says a decision on the appointment should be known before the end of the week.
