Landowners are calling on the Papua New Guinea government to declare a state of emergency in the Enga Province to stop illegal mining at Porgera gold mine.

The Chairman of the Porgera Development Authority Nixon Mangape told the Post Courier newspaper that illegal mining had increased, and there was a need for more police to look after company and government properties.

The newspaper reports landowners support Porgera Joint Venture carrying out mining activities, but want a state of emergency declared to address law and order issues with illegal miners .
