Fiji's FIRCA to press on with tax prosecutions

12:19 pm on 24 October 2006

The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority will review and press on with the prosecution of tax offenders despite a setback in the Suva magistrate's court.

The Authority's prosecution of Suva businessman and former lord mayor Dhansukh Lal Bhika failed, when magistrate Ajmal Khan criticized the quality of the evidence and acquitted the accused.

Mr Bhika had been charged with attempting to avoid more than 300-thousand US dollars in tax and was defended by an Australian Queen's Counsel.
