Prominent Suva lawyer calls for Fiji President to resign

A Suva lawyer who has opposed the government in a number of important cases says Fiji's president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, has been too weak in his handling of the ongoing impasse between the military and the government.

Tevita Fa has told Fiji TV that President Iloilo should resign.

Mr Fa says as commander-in-chief of the military, President Iloilo, should have disciplined the military commander, Commodore Bainimarama, and he should be blamed for the strained relations.

Commodore Bainimarama has warned that if the government does not withdraw the controversial Reconciliation and Unity and the Qoliqoli bills, he will walk into the prime minister's office and demand Laisenia Qarase's resignation.

85-year old President Iloilo was reappointed for another term earlier this year at the insistence of the military.
